Q & A: Get to know Karen Go

‘… Senior Crew Employment Specialist, rolls with the punches and wouldn’t be without Supertuna!’

  1. How long have you been in the industry?
I worked with a Manning Agency in the Philippines, handling the processing of Filipino crew members for employment on commercial vessels. In 2001, I was invited to the Isle of Man to familiarise myself with the company we collaborated with and observe their operations. During this visit, we built a strong relationship, and I was offered the opportunity to relocate. After a brief period of preparing my documents, I moved to the Isle of Man in April 2002.`
  2. Can you tell us about your role in the company and what a typical day looks like for you?
As a Senior Crew Employment Specialist, my role is all about taking care of the crew. A typical day is diverse and can include tasks such as preparing crew contracts or SEAs and managing crew payroll. This position allows me to work closely with captains—not just on payroll matters 😊 – as well as collaborate with yacht managers and the owner’s representatives to assist with various crew employment issues.
  3. What is your favourite way to unwind after a long day at work?
It really depends on how the day goes! If it’s been a challenging day, I’ll usually unwind with some exercise, like a Box Fit class. If I’m feeling less energetic, I might opt for a spa day, a relaxing treatment, or enjoy a nice meal at a good restaurant.
  4. How did you end up at the Quadrant Group?
I was considering a new challenge after more than two decades with my previous employer. It was a big move, but the new opportunity was appealing and I’m now 2-years into my role and loving it!
  5. What’s the best thing about your job?
I enjoy challenges, and in my role, I’m accustomed to handling them! Every challenge is a learning opportunity, and since no two days are the same, it keeps things engaging. I’m fortunate to have a supportive team that offers valuable advice, helping us stay on the right track.
  6. If you did not have this job, what would your dream job be?
‘Hotel and Restaurant Manager’, this was what I studied at university. Maybe I would find myself at a boutique hotel or large one. But I’d prefer to be in the back office, making sure everything is managed and coordinated well.
  7. How would your closest friends describe you in three words?
‘Organised, funny and direct’ – If my friend is wearing a bad outfit and she asks me, ‘is it nice?’ I can’t lie to her.
  8. What’s the most valuable lesson you’ve learned in your career?
‘You can’t control everything – you just have to roll with the punches sometimes!’
  9. On your dream dinner party guest list of 3, who would you bring? (Dead or alive, maximum of 3 people)
I live a long way away from home, so I’d have to say my Mum – she is a social butterfly and always good with dinner party guests! Also, my Dad who is slightly more reserved, but he’d have a great time and lastly my brother … so he won’t feel left out!
  10. You’re marooned on a desert island with just one song to listen to – which one is it?
‘Supertuna’ by Jin of BTS – it’s fun and catchy!
