How long have you been in the industry?
I’ve got 22 years of experience in total, including a three-year stint in the e-Gaming industry along the way. I moved to the Isle of Man back in 2003, after spending two years in Manila, Philippines, in a shore-based commercial shipping role. I started out in entry-level crew positions, which really helped me get to grips with the ins and outs of commercial shipping, flag state rules, STCW95, and what both owners and ports need. That shipping background still comes in handy in what I do today!
Can you tell us about your role in the company and what a typical day looks like for you?
I’m a Senior Crew Employment Specialist – the role keeps me very busy!! Crew payroll is a big part of my position, ensuring that it’s managed with total efficiency month on month. I’m also required to oversee the needs of our crew, including crew records, preparing contracts and operating within various deadlines! I am in regular communication with Captains and Yacht Managers, so my attention to detail and ability to juggle the needs of our stakeholders is crucial.
What is your favourite way to unwind after a long day at work?
I’m happiest with the simple things – a peaceful walk or quality time with family and close friends. I love hanging out with them, whether it’s over a good meal, a great chat, or just listening to music. We sometimes get the karaoke going too… though I’ll admit, I tend to leave the singing to everyone else!
How did you end up at Quadrant?
I had worked with our Crew Services Director Paul Fleming for many years at a global oil major, managing a large fleet of VLCC, LPG & LNG vessels so when the opportunity arose to work together again, but this time in the Superyacht industry, I thought it was a chance not to be missed.
What is it about working at Quadrant that you enjoy?
That’s an easy one – it’s the people I work with! I’m really lucky to be part of such a fantastic team where everyone supports each other. I also really appreciate the office environment and the flexibility we have – it makes a big difference in being able to balance work and personal life.
What is the best advice you’ve ever been given?
Build strong relationships based on trust – they make challenging situations easier to overcome!
How would your closest friends describe you in three words?
I just messaged my best friend to ask her and, in her words, ‘trustworthy’, ‘dependable’, and ‘considerate’….so let’s go with that!
Share a piece of advice to newcomers in the industry?
Get stuck in and stay curious! The maritime industry is so broad, and there’s always something new to learn. Ask lots of questions, look for mentors, and make the most of every opportunity to grow your skills and knowledge. It really pays off.
What’s the most valuable lesson you’ve learned in your career?
Clear and transparent communication is critical! Be organised and committed to deadlines – it ensures everyone stays on the same page.
If you could go back to a time/chapter in your life, would you, and when would you go back to?
I’d go back to when I was just starting out in my career. It was a huge learning curve – I made my fair share of mistakes early on, but I learned from them quickly. I’d tell my younger self it’s okay to take risks, trust the process, and be patient. Things have a way of falling into place.
You’re marooned on a desert island with just one song to listen to – which one is it?
My religion and faith are very important to me, so ‘Amazing Grace’ for its power and the feeling of comfort and peace it brings to me – I also recently learned to play this on the piano. Could I add some Abba and Carpenters too?
